As a volunteer program of the Georgetown Police Department, Blue Santa has provided toys to low-income children annually for more than 15 years. In 2008 more than 1,600 Georgetown children received toys from Blue Santa. Donations are deposited in the Blue Santa account of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, a nonprofit that manages Blue Santa and other community programs. Monetary donations can be made at any time.

Each year, the Georgetown Police Department, its department volunteers, and volunteer individuals and businesses join forces to hold special events or set up donation barrels to collect toys. Toys are sorted into age-appropriate categories and special Christmas boxes are filled for families who apply for assistance.

Distribution day is a big event for Blue Santa families. Children get to meet Blue Santa and participate in fun activities while parents or guardians pick up gift boxes at the distribution center.
